Getting the YouTube thumbnail size right

YouTube recommends 1280 × 720 for custom thumbnails. Screenshots, phone photos and designs made at other sizes get letterboxed or squashed if uploaded as they are.

Thumbnails are viewed small, so the tool keeps the file light without visible loss. Big, high-contrast text reads best at small sizes.

    Questions

Can I make a thumbnail from a vertical phone photo?

Yes. "Crop to 1280 × 720" keeps the centre of the photo; "Fit without cropping" keeps all of it with a blurred background.

Is my photo uploaded to a server?

No. The resizing runs inside your browser with JavaScript, so the image stays on your device. Nothing is uploaded unless you choose to share it with "Share by link" in the Download step. Once the page has loaded, resizing keeps working even if you go offline. If your device can't handle an image, the tool can shrink it on our server instead, but only if you agree, and it is deleted right away.
