Getting the Facebook profile picture size right

Facebook profile pictures are square and shown as a circle. A tall or wide photo has to be cropped to fit, which can cut people out of a group photo.

Making it square first keeps everything. Keep faces near the centre, because the corners are hidden by the circle.

    Questions

    Why 1000 × 1000?

It is comfortably above the size Facebook displays, so the photo stays sharp on high-resolution screens without being a heavy upload.

Is my photo uploaded to a server?

No. The resizing runs inside your browser with JavaScript, so the image stays on your device. Nothing is uploaded unless you choose to share it with "Share by link" in the Download step. Once the page has loaded, resizing keeps working even if you go offline. If your device can't handle an image, the tool can shrink it on our server instead, but only if you agree, and it is deleted right away.
