EstimateA typical photo at 40 KB is about 450 to 550 pixels wide

    How to use it

    1. Choose or drop your photo. You can add several at once.
    2. The tool finds the highest quality that stays under 40 KB.
    3. Check the new size under the preview, then download.

When you need a 40 KB image

A 40 KB limit appears on some state government and scholarship forms, usually for the photo. If a form rejects your photo for being too large, this page fixes it without installing anything.

The tool saves the image as a JPG and searches for the highest quality setting that keeps the file under 40 KB. If that is not enough, it reduces the width and height a little at a time and tells you when it did.

    Getting the sharpest result

Crop the photo to what matters before resizing: the face for a photo, the ink for a signature. A 40 KB file shared across fewer pixels looks cleaner. As an estimate, a typical photo at 40 KB is about 450 to 550 pixels wide; more detail (hair, patterned clothes, busy backgrounds) means fewer pixels at the same size.

    Questions

Will my photo be exactly 40 KB?

It will be just under 40 KB, usually within a few percent. Forms check that a file is not over the limit, so the tool picks the best quality that stays under it. If your form also has a minimum size, enter it in Min KB under Settings.

Why did the width and height get smaller?

If the photo cannot get under 40 KB at its original size, even at low JPG quality, the tool shrinks the dimensions step by step until it fits. If your form needs exact pixel dimensions, type them into Width and Height: the tool then keeps those dimensions and only lowers the quality.

Does the form count 40 KB as 40000 or 40960 bytes?

Websites differ, so the tool plays it safe: the file is kept at or below 40,000 bytes, which passes whether the form counts 1 KB as 1000 or 1024 bytes.

Is my photo uploaded to a server?

No. The resizing runs inside your browser with JavaScript, so the image stays on your device. Nothing is uploaded unless you choose to share it with "Share by link" in the Download step. Once the page has loaded, resizing keeps working even if you go offline. If your device can't handle an image, the tool can shrink it on our server instead, but only if you agree, and it is deleted right away.
